Highlight From US National Convention

Here is a full audio transcript of the closing address by Continental Counsellor Rebequa Murphy to the US National Convention. Bolded text is for emphasis and my comments are in square brackets:

[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]

It is wonderful the manner in which the friends immediately focused their consultation on that 19 April letter. And you know, to me, what that letter says to us, what the House of Justice is saying in that letter, ?O People of Baha, Erase every doubt from your heart and soul.? If there is even a trace of doubt, you know in the Seven Valleys, Baha’u’llah says if a wayfarer travels for a hundred thousand years and yet doesn’t behold the face of the beloved he shouldn’t be discouraged, and the House isn’t saying a hundred thousands of years, they’re just saying for 5 years [laughter background]. Be patient, be patient, be patient, don’t allow doubt to creep into your heart and don’t allow the doubt of other people, no matter how well it is articulated, no matter how many times it is repeated, don’t allow that doubt to enter your heat. You have to weed that out of your heart.

And on that first day, Penny [Walker – sent from the ITC by the UHJ] said that the Ridvan message is a lense. A lense through which we can see the progress of the Faith. The lense is that of the House of Justice, to look through that lense, we have to put our own lense aside.

We don’t want to be those people that want to see God with their own eyes or hear His melodies with their own ears. Because we’ve been given the gift of being able to see through the eyes of the House of Justice and listen through the ears of the House of Justice.

So when we look at the progress of the Faith, even if our little ?C? cluster is stuggling; even if our ?A? cluster is not yet seeing growth, no doubt should reside in our hearts. Because when we see the progress of the Faith through the eyes of the House of Justice, then we will be able to see the victory of others as our own victory. The victory of those friends in Mongolia as our victory.

[END TRANSCRIPT]

*********

Rely upon God, thy God, and the Lord of thy fathers. For the people are wandering in the paths of delusion bereft of discernment to see God with their own eyes, or hear His Melody with their own ears. Thus have We found them, as thou also dost witness.
Thus have their superstitions become veils between them and their own hearts and kept them from the path of God, the Exalted, the Great.
Baha’u’llah – Tablet of Ahmad

O Son of Spirit!
The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice, turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor. Ponder this in thy heart, how it behoveth thee to be. Verily justice is my gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes.
Baha’u’llah – Hidden Words

  • Bueno.
Ella v? m??s all??.

“Assist ye, O My people, My chosen servants who have arisen to make mention of Me among My creatures and to exalt My Word throughout My realm. These, truly, are the stars of the heaven of My loving providence and the lamps of My guidance unto all mankind. But he whose words conflict with that which hath been sent down in My Holy Tablets is not of Me. Beware lest ye follow any impious pretender.”
    Baha-ullah

Did she really say “We don’t want to be those people that want to see God with their own eyes, and hear His melody with their own ears?” Did she say that to be ironic or sarcastic, or did she mean it?

I think what she meant was that we need to keep faith no matter how slow progress is, and that we need to look to our divinely guided institutions to help us see the true forcast of where we as a world community stand in regards to the Faith’s overall growth and progress. It is unfortunate that her comments have been taken to mean that our institutions have precendence over the individual’s personal path towards spiritual growth. It reminds me of an unfortunate comment I once made as the liaison for a community health center. I said we provided”womb to tomb care” –meaning we served people through birth through old age…in writing it appeared we were killing people off. Please dont judge Counselor Murphy’s overall speech by one poorly worded coomment. I myself am undergoing a spiritual crisis and found her overall words to help, not push we further away from my faith. It helps to be reminded to turn to the Seven Valleys for guidance re my spiritual journey. The Faith is perfect but we humans are not. If we were there wouild be no need for God to send prophets to guide us.

    Kitti,

I think that we all make mistakes in how we speak. Which is why I think that Sen McGlinn deserves more understanding in terms of how his words have been taken. That being said, I can’t imagine what Counsellor Murphy could have been thinking. Surely she knew that that she was taking one of Baha’u’llah’s most memorable utterances and reversing it! Surely she saw that she’d turned his exhortation to see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears upside down!

As for the fact that we aren’t perfect and need the guidance of God’s prophets, this is true enough. But what is it the prophets do? They come, as Baha’u’llah did, to remind us to trust our reason, trust our conscience, and to investigate reality for ourselves. They remind us to see with our own eyes, to know of our own knowledge, to set aside blind imitation. They come to abolish every variety of superstition. When Counsellor Murphy tells us to set our own “lens” aside in favor of the “lense” of the House, she is undermining the guidance of all of God’s prophets. She is raising up new idols in the place of old ones and providing an object lesson in human perversity and impiety.

Yes I agree, that is how her comment taken only by itself struck me, but on learning of the full talk it had more the impression of the comment related to by Kitti McKean.

Ok this is a matter of lenses or seeing things the way the UHJ does…no matter how I try I will never be able to see things through the lens of the UHJ because they are infallible and I am not. The UHJ guidance is a matter of obedience.

We just obey the UHJ no matter what …we will never be able to see things the way they do.

I think trying to see through the UHJ’s lens is what gets us into trouble…because we can’t do it.

This is not an issue of come over to the UHJ’s side and see it their way. This is we are on the UHJ’s side we will never ever be able to see it the way they do BUT WE OBEY THE UHJ instantly and exactly.

If you have to see things with the lens of the UHJ to act on what the UHJ says then you are not obeying…you are logical reasoning!

Of course logical reasoning is GOOD but in the case of the UHJ we will never be able to see through their lens of infallibility…this is why we have complete obediance to them.
