Why We Don’t Have Peace in the Middle East – Part II

In the previous post I showed a clip in which a children’s television show teaches hatred of Jews to Muslim children. Here is the result of this systematic brainwashing.

The above video shows a clip from Saudi Arabia TV in which a three and a half year old girl by the name of Basmallah (literally her name means, “in the name of God”) is interviewed about Jews. Count how many times she is held up as a model for other children and called a “true Muslim”.

Any discussion of the current state of the Middle East as well as its future must include this blatant and widespread campaign of hatred. Unless it is eradicated nothing will change. Ever.

    I think that this is a bit much of only one side of the story. This isn’t “Why We Don’t Have Peace — Part II”. It’s more of “Part I”. We know that there are some in Arab countries who crave violence and are stirring up hate towards Israel and to the Jewish people. And it’s definitely sad that they indoctrinate children. But there’s another reason that we don’t have peace.

    This is a transcript of a radio conversationbetween Israeli soldiers in Gaza. I have the copy of Harper’s Magazine before me where’s it’s printed, so it comes from a reliable souce

    * * *

    Guard: We spotted an Arab female about 100 meters below our emplacement, near the light armored vehicle gate.

    Headquarters (HQ): Observation post “Spain,” do you see it?

    Observation Post (OP): Affirmative, it’s a young girl. She’s now running east.

    HQ: What is her position?

    OP: She’s currently north of the authorized zone.

    Guard: Very inappropriate location.

    [Gunfire]

    OP: She’s now behind an embankment, 250 meters from the barracks. She keeps running east. The hits are right on her.

    HQ: Are you talking about a girl under ten?

    OP: Approximately a ten-year-old girl.

    HQ: Roger.

    OP: OP to HQ.

    HQ: Receiving, over.

    OP: She’s behind the embankment, dying of fear, the hits are right on her, a centimeter from her.

    Guard: Our troops are storming toward her now. They are around 70 meters from her.

    HQ: I understand that the company commander and his squad are out?

    Guard: Affirmative, with a few more soldiers.

    OP: Received. Looks like one of the positions dropped her.

    HQ: What, did you see the hit? Is she down?

    OP: She’s down. Right now she isn’t moving.

    Company Commander (CC) [to HQ]: I and another soldier are going in. [to the squad] Forward, to confirm the kill.

    CC [to HQ]: We fired and killed her. She is wearing pants, jeans and a shirt. Also she had a kuffiyeh on her head. I also confirmed the kill. Over.

    HQ: Roger.

    CC [on general communications band]: Any motion, anyone who moves in the zone, even if it’s a three-year-old, should be killed. Over.

    I read somewhere else — it’s not as reliable but hardly improbable — that the girl had twenty bullets in her. In either case, *Harper’s* reports that the company commander is being tried for his part in this, but also that the charges carry a *maximum* penalty of three years.

    assming the transcript is factual (I surmise it was taken from the court proceedings?) the incident it describes is horrendous and despicable. I totally agree that both sides have to change and that they both have to bear responsability. I was simply pointing out that the Muslim side in this systematically programs their children to HATE and to use violence. AFAIK the Israeli children’s programming is not doing this and Israeli school children are not learning from math textbooks which give lessons like: “If there are 5 Jews and you kill 2 Jews, how many Jews are left?”

    *Harper’s*confirms that, yes, the transcript is from the court-martial of the company commander. As you can see from my previous comments, I think it’s good that you show this side of the story: I only wanted to show another.

    It is true that Jewish children in Israel aren’t being brainwashed in the way that some Arab children are. But it is also true that no Arab power is occupying so much as a square mile of the internationally recognized territory of Israel. That’s why the Israeli officer can’t get more than three years — the family has no legal recourse because they don’t have the rights of citizens in their own country. Their daughter can die from Israeli bullets, but they have no recourse to Israeli law.

    But I think you make an important point when you observe that Israeli children generally aren’t being indoctrinated in any comparable way. I agree with you that this matters, but I draw a different conclusion. It’s because the political climate in Israel is relatively free of hysteria that we can expect the Jewish state to take the first, crucial step in the peace process. Israel has a healthy democracy, and therefore the potential to raise up leaders capable of a generous move.

    And as for what that move should be, I think this ought to be obvious. Israel is bound, by treaties her leaders have pledged to respect, to leave the occupied territories. Not pledged, you will notice, to leave if Arabs stop teaching their children to hate or if suicide bombers stop attacking Israeli cities. Israel must leave Gaza and the West Bank, period. I don’t know if this would bring peace, but it would be the most effective response I can imagine to propaganda of the sort you’ve shown. Because when people spread hate and lies about you — something all too familiar to the Baha’is of Iran — it’s no secret that the best policy is to be sure that your own conduct is beyond reproach. If Israel respected international law, the hatemongers would have a very hard time making any of their filth stick.
